Soul Science on Auckland’s Drum and Bass Scene

Soul Science, Auckland DJ’s Romantech and Control, have been a consistent presence promoting, performing and producing on Auckland’s Drum and Bass scene for a fair few years now.

In November 2009 Soul Science present their debut mix sampler “Dojo Inspectors” featuring over 30 unreleased original tracks in a fast paced and dynamic club style live mix.

Though the styles are varied, on closer inspection, several distinct cuts reveal textbook tributes to the scene’s most prominent Liquid Funk artists including Calibre (”Low Key”), Marky (”All Hands”) and Alix Perez (”Who Loves Ya?”). A wide variety of subgenres are showcased in the full length of the mix including Liquid Funk, Jungle, Minimal, Deep/Atmospheric, Tech Step as well as tracks deeply influenced by Electro, Reggae, Hip Hop, Jazz and Rock.

The Soul Science sound definitely embraces a broad spectrum in an attempt to reveal what drum’n bass can be and is, but also that ultimately the foundation of Drum and Bass is groove, is a vibe - for partying, for dancing and just rolling out.

The Story of Soul Science is a simple one. With the conclusion of the Data:Bass and Drum and Bass Addicts operations in 2005, Matt and John teamed up to continue bringing new and fresh parties to the Auckland scene and a platform for Auckland’s new breed of DJ’s to play out, starting with the weekly “Soul Science” at Foci, the celebrated series of free Snapshot parties at Khuja, 4:20 and Fu as well as a series of international tours featuring Artifical Intelligence, Greg Packer, Suv and A-Sides.
